FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What to expect from my first lesson?
Your first lesson will be quite chatty, as we get to know each other and find out what you want from your lessons. There will be a variety of exercises and challenges for you to get your fingers around, which will give me a chance to choose the best teaching approach for you.
  • What do I need for my first lesson?
A pencil and a homework book (yes you will get some homework on the very first lesson)! It is a good idea to practice saying the first 7 letters of your alphabet forwards and backwards before attending your lesson, this will get you a step ahead!
  • How many lessons would you recommend per week?
One 30 minute session per week is a great start for beginners! For the more advanced player (Grade 6 onwards) I would suggest increasing this to one 60 minute session per week.
  • How much practice should I do per week?
For beginners, 15-20 minutes 5-6 times per week is great. If grading, I would suggest 20 minutes every day. For more advanced students, 45-60 minutes every day would be ideal. Contrary to popular opinion, most of your learning is NOT taking place within your lesson. Lessons are there to check in, or study in specific detail one small area. The student who progresses the most, is the one who understands that the bulk of learning actually takes place at home. This is where you have more time to study, recap and hone in on practice.
  • Do I need a piano at home?
A piano or keyboard will be fine. This is a big purchase, so before you commit you need to check your child will stick with it! You can get a starter keyboard to begin which should be okay until around Grade 2 standard. After this, I strongly suggest a full-sized piano (with 88 keys), at least 2 pedals, and weighted, touch sensitive keys. Electric and acoustic are suitable.
  • Are group lessons offered?
No. Lessons are strictly on a one-to-one basis. This means your lessons are tailored to you, and meet your needs and expectations. Group lessons often hinder progress, and less attention can be given to each pupil which delays learning.
  • Do you travel to students’ homes?
No. All lessons are face-to-face at the studio in Sutton Coldfield. If you would prefer not to travel, I can offer the option of online lessons instead.
  • What age can I start lessons?
I would recommend 4 years old as a minimum age, depending on how well your child can concentrate. There is no upper limit to starting!
  • Do you teach adults?
Yes! It is never too late to learn!
  • Why should I take lessons?
Playing a musical instrument is an activity which stimulates every part of the brain. It has been proven to increase concentration, discipline and memory, and also been linked to a higher IQ! The piano in particular improves co-ordination as both hands are used, the brain is reading two different parts (treble clef and bass clef), and your feet have to control the pedals. You also have to remember to count!
  • What are the benefits to grading?
Not everybody wants to work through grading, and that’s fine! But for those who do, it is great to reach the milestones that grading provides, and recognition for your hard work. The higher grades are also awarded UCAS points for college and University application. Plus, everyone loves a certificate!
  • How long will it take to complete my first Grade?
There isn’t an answer for this! Everyone is different and there are many factors which determine how quickly someone moves through the grades. Some people take months, some take years. The best thing you can do is keep practicing regularly and listen carefully to advice from your teacher.
